Die Bedeutung der nichtkommunistischen Arbeiterbewegung in China 1919-1927
This dissertation (Marburg, 1994) examines the early history of the Chinese labour movement from the 4 May movement of 1919 to the Putsch of Chiang-kai Shek’s Kuomintang in April 1927 and to assess the role of the Chinese
Communist Party (CCP) in the labour movement in comparison to other political forces. Contrary to the existing historiography, which states that the labour movement became significant only with the establishment of the CCP, Dr Choi con-cludes that the role of the communists has been exaggerated and the role of non-communist forces, inspired by Sun Yatsen’s nationalist ideology, greatly underestimated. He also shows that the number of strikes in this period is amlost double the figure previously assumed.
