Alexander de Antoni, born 1950 in Vienna, studied Catholic Theology at the University of Vienna, Austria, from 1969-1974. Personal contacts to missionaries working in the former Irian Jaya motivated his first visit to Asmat in 1984. Four further journeys followed. The confrontation with the culture of this ethnic group initiated his interest in their social and cultural concepts. He studied Social and Cultural Anthropology at the University of Vienna and received his doctoral degree 2009. His research interests focus on the relation of the cosmology of the Asmat to their social practices and his dissertation deals with their mythical traditions.
