Advancing globalisation has not abolished the relevance of geographical space, but has merely led to a worldwide transformation of spatial order. Within Europe, increasing disparities can even be identified as a consequence. There are clear indications of centralisation tendencies, as becomes evident in the growing interest in, and the preferential support of, cities and regions capable of keeping pace in global competition. By contrast, the purpose of a policy of equalisation and the necessity of state support for problematic regions on the margins are increasingly being called into question. But what does this mean for peripheral areas in Europe? Is further downsizing unavoidable, or are there nevertheless opportunities for restructuring?
This volume contains a mosaic of contributions that illuminate the situation in a number of peripheral areas of Europe from very different perspectives and thereby provide important insights into current problems away from the central areas. They deal with the influence of state organisation on the emergence of disparities and on the development opportunities of European peripheries (Robert Musil), with processes of regression and peripheralisation using the examples of Vorpommern and the Westeifel (Anja Reichert-Schick), with the integration of persons of Turkish origin with a migration background in eastern Upper Franconia (Mariya Ransberger), with the opportunities and problems of international the advantages of voluntary municipal cooperation in Styria (Franz Brunner and Corinna Mitterhuber). These contributions demonstrate the diversity of the periphery in Europe, which cannot be captured by uniform research and solution approaches.
