Fluctuating and uncertain demand volumes in the German automotive industry create an unfavourable planning basis for supplier companies. As a result, these companies are forced to maintain additional resources in order to ensure the supply of the manufacturer in the correct quantities and on schedule. Higher overall costs for suppliers as well as rising procurement costs for automobile manufacturers are the consequence. This study discusses four alternative call-off concepts and analyses the resulting cost reduction potentials for the supply chain in several case studies and a survey. Owing to an unequal distribution of the efficiency gains achieved through a more efficient coordination of information flows, a framework for classifying supplier companies is presented.
