This treatise develops fundamentals for the planning, design and dimensioning of components made of fibre-reinforced composites. After presenting the material-specific fundamentals, addressing among other things the particular requirements of automotive engineering, the mechanical properties and their dependence on various parameters are investigated. On this basis, criteria are developed for identifying components suitable for the use of fibre-reinforced composites, with the aid of which an automatable analysis method is implemented. Its application to automotive structures makes it possible to estimate the lightweight design potential generated by fibre-reinforced composites. The evaluation of the method’s practical relevance and its positioning within the process chain of body development conclude the work.
