Against the background of increasing energy-related problems and the associated search for solution strategies, various building services and structural measures for the energy optimisation of Gründerzeit apartment buildings in Hamburg are examined in the field of the refurbishment of existing buildings.

The subject of the first part is a typological examination of the building stock carried out with regard to the selection of the object of investigation. It serves to analyse the typological features relevant to energy performance that these buildings have in common, and the possible transferability of results within the stock of Gründerzeit apartment buildings.

In the second part of the study, the economic and ecological effects of various energy optimisation measures and combinations of measures, calculated for a reference object selected on this basis, are presented and assessed comparatively.
