Agent technology has gained increasing popularity in recent years. The main technical challenges (e.g. interaction, cooperation, interoperability) associated with intelligent agents and multi-agent systems appear to have been solved, or approaches exist that make a solution likely in the coming years.

Soft computing (including fuzzy systems and neural networks) has likewise been the subject of scientific investigation for some time and has to some extent also found its way into business practice. With their specific characteristics, the two methodological fields of software agents and soft computing appear well suited for deployment in IT systems for business process management. To date, only initial concepts exist in this area.

The contributions in this edited volume provide indications of which potentials and prerequisites are relevant for the introduction of agent-based tools or soft computing methods in the context of business process management, and they also offer initial practical design recommendations.
