Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS) are used in the electrical power grid to increase transmission capacity and stability, as well as to stabilise the voltage at network nodes. They are usually equipped with power electronic semiconductors (e.g. thyristors), enabling them to take effect within a few milliseconds. For economic reasons, the use of vacuum circuit breakers (VCB) in FACTS is to be investigated. The investigation is carried out by means of simulations using a power system analysis program. Two fields of application are suitable for the use of VCBs. One is the MSSR (Mechanically Switched Series Reactor), a reactor that can be bypassed by VCBs and can be used for load flow control or for damping power oscillations. The other is the MSD (Mechanically Switched Device), a shunt compensation installation for providing capacitive and inductive reactive power at a network node in order to stabilise the voltage. To determine the electrical stresses (e.g. overvoltages) on the VCBs during switching operations, a self-developed model is used which takes the electrical properties of VCBs into account. The technical feasibility is examined taking into account the parameters of VCBs available on the market, and the necessary protective circuits are determined.
