This study investigated the biological and chemical reaction processes in municipal solid waste in reaction systems of different sizes. The focus was on anaerobic degradation processes, which were analysed on the basis of, among other things, gas formation and the DOC concentration in the leachate. In addition to identifying influencing parameters, the central question was whether models of biological reaction processes can be transferred from smaller to larger reaction systems. Gas formation was simulated using artificial neural networks (ANN). In experimental investigations, environmental influences such as the pH value and the acid buffering capacity in the waste were examined in greater detail. The hydrolytic processes involved in the degradation of the organic matter in the waste, and the biofilm formation observed at the same time, were visualised and quantified by means of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
