Torsional vibrations arise in mechanical shafts when these couple rotating masses with one another. Particularly in the shaft trains of power plant turbine-generator sets, torsional vibrations constitute a significant problem due to the low inherent mechanical damping. At present, torsional monitoring and assessment systems are employed on turbine-generator sets.
In this work, a power electronic system for the active damping of torsional vibrations in power plant turbine-generator sets is developed and analysed. Various control methods and converter variants are presented and discussed. The damping system is validated on a test rig.
