Virtual acoustics, or auralisation, refers to the acoustic simulation of rooms. This means that audio signals are modified in such a way that they sound to a listener as if they were being heard from loudspeakers in the simulated room. The result of the simulation is determined by the geometry and properties of the room as well as by the positions of the loudspeakers and of the listener, who is replaced by microphones. Auralisation methods are used, among other things, in effects units in electronic music and in connection with the simulation of hands-free communication systems.

This book describes a stereophonic room simulation based on the image source model presented by Allen and Berkley. To this end, the necessary fundamentals of technical acoustics and electroacoustics are provided, from which the image source model is derived. Furthermore, the filter theory required for room simulation is explained in connection with methods for the efficient implementation of FIR filters.

This book is intended as a practical seminar aiming to convey to the reader the theory and practice of virtual acoustics required to enable them to design and implement their own algorithms. Knowledge of signal processing and advanced mathematics, as well as knowledge of MATLAB and C/C++, is assumed. In both the MATLAB and the C/C++ implementations, the use of third-party libraries has deliberately been kept to a minimum in order to keep the required prior knowledge as limited as possible.
