Classifier mills are among the most widely used mill types worldwide and enable the production of materials with narrow particle size distributions and a well-defined top size. In order to achieve the required product specification, however, the operation is usually optimised empirically, often intuitively. This is frequently associated with considerable experimental effort. A deeper understanding of the complex interrelations between the individual process steps within the classifier mill (comminution, classification, transport, mixing) would allow a realistic mathematical description of the individual processes and thereby reduce the experimental effort involved in the industrial operation of such mills.

The present work focuses on the first systematic experimental and numerical investigation of single-phase and multiphase flow in a classifier mill. Fundamental insights are obtained into the influence of the flow on the stress intensity acting on the feed particles in the grinding chamber as well as on the classification taking place at the classifier wheel. These findings are used for the further development of a general comminution model.
