The two-field system of the logic of distinction distributes all circumstances to be described across two fields that are connected with and separated from one another. On the first field, what is distinguishable is delimited. Delimitation exists only in conjunction with exclusion. The first field stands for unity or system, defined as a whole. Consequently, there is no unity without its opposite: non-unity. The first field stands for unity as a whole capable of distinction, e.g. a file on the computer. The second field stands for absolutised unity, in which all possible differences have been eliminated through abstraction. What has emerged is an entity without boundaries: an “infinitive”, e.g. to open. Both fields form a logical-functional compound: to open the file. These basic logical outlines of the computer were developed some 2500 years ago by Parmenides and later treated by Plato in the dialogue “Parmenides”. The binary model of distinction is significant for the shaping of logic as a whole and in particular for grounding the logic of distinction and modern systems theories.
