In this book, Jan Erik Körner provides an overview of the state of the art in exhaust gas heat utilisation, focusing on the Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC). He describes the boundary conditions that must be taken into account when designing systems for mobile applications and derives a method that allows an ORC to be designed and a working fluid to be selected. A detailed examination of the process is carried out on the basis of a simulation model. The selection of an expansion machine suitable for the process is discussed. All components are designed on the basis of the simulation. An ORC is commissioned on a test bench. The challenges of commissioning and operation are discussed. A detailed balance analysis is performed, the energy conversion losses that occur are described, and potential for improvement is identified.
