Families with disabled children in particular show great interest in dolphin-assisted therapy and experience contact with dolphins as very helpful and conducive to development. Alongside the child’s impairment, the present study focuses on possible secondary effects and psychosocial risk factors affecting parents and siblings. This circumstance makes it understandable why many providers of dolphin-assisted therapy aim to offer such therapy as a complete package by involving the entire family in the therapeutic process. From the perspective of animal welfare, however, there are legitimate ethical concerns regarding the capture, transport and keeping of the animals. With growing awareness of the role of the animals, there is still a long way to go in reconciling ethics and animal welfare with the therapeutic objective, especially since the patients concerned and their families rate dolphin-assisted therapy as extremely successful. The present investigation aims to contribute to an objectification of the debate on dolphin-assisted therapy by providing well-founded statements on how the therapy works for children with severe multiple disabilities. The overarching aim is to contribute to an understanding of the processes occurring during dolphin-assisted therapy and thereby possibly to promote the further development of effective and economical treatments for disabled children. In doing so, those aspects are to be identified which support the presumed effective factors of dolphin-assisted therapy and make them comprehensible.
