The Lower Saxony universities of Braunschweig, Clausthal, Göttingen, Hannover and Oldenburg, the Ostfalia University of Applied Sciences, and the affiliated institutes Clausthaler Umwelttechnik-Institut GmbH (CUTEC Institut) and NEXT ENERGY – EWE Forschungszentrum für Energietechnologie e. V. have set themselves the task of compiling a report on research activities and research potential in Lower Saxony in the field of energy storage and energy systems, in order to provide both policymakers in Lower Saxony and industry in Lower Saxony and throughout Germany with a profile of the local research landscape.
With its particular geological and geographical features, Lower Saxony has, in comparison with the other German federal states, excellent opportunities to convert substantial parts of its energy supply to renewable energies. Immediate tasks are the expansion of the electricity grid and the increase of storage capacity for electrical energy.
This report provides an overview of the relevant technologies and of the current competencies at the above-mentioned scientific institutions. It presents the subject matter from the perspective of the editors and co-authors and makes no claim to completeness. In each case, the significance, the challenges and the opportunities of deploying the various energy storage technologies are described, together with the resulting need for modification of the energy system. In addition, the innovation and technology potentials as well as the possible transfer of research into industry are outlined, and potential and necessary future research activities within Lower Saxony are identified.
In order to do justice to the inter- and transdisciplinary character of the topic, the technical considerations are complemented by a discussion of research fields in information and communication technology as well as aspects of economics, law and the social sciences.
