This work investigates methods for the broadband compensation of transmission line couplers in inhomogeneous media. Building on an extension of the well-known capacitive method, particular attention is given to the design of generic four-port compensation networks. In addition to the influence of losses on coupler properties, further limiting factors such as manufacturing tolerances and measurement accuracy are examined in detail. The theoretical investigations are supported by measurements.
