Flows occur in all areas of nature and technology. In nature, flows are essential to life. Humans and animals require a blood circulation to supply the body with vital nutrients; living organisms need water and air in order to live. Flows also exist in the atmosphere, in rivers and in the oceans. Flows also occur on the planets and in the galaxies, such as the vortex flows of the spiral arms of spiral galaxies. In technology, flows serve to operate machines and plants, to transfer matter, heat and energy, to generate thrust and lift, and to provide drag (Durst ⁵). Without thrust and without lift, aviation, for example, would not be possible.
