This report uses a simulation model of the German transmission grid, based on the Network Development Plan (Netzentwicklungsplan) 2014, to examine the conditions under which the planned “South-East Direct Current Link” (D corridor) would no longer be required. The selected study scenarios take into account shifts of wind power generation from the Baltic Sea to Bavaria, the phase-out of lignite-based power generation in central Germany, additional capacities of regionally distributed gas-fired power plants and (long-term) storage of surplus energy and capacity in the high-wind region of northern Germany.
The results show that effective alternatives to the expansion of the D corridor exist. For example, by coupling power generation in the high-wind region with energy storage, generation can be fed into the interconnected grid more evenly and, moreover, in a consumption-oriented manner, thereby avoiding grid bottlenecks and thus additional transport capacities. The assessment of these alternatives with regard to, for example, economic, ecological, legal, political and/or social criteria is not considered in this study.
