Dr Georg Wenker of the University of Marburg carried out a survey of various dialects in 1880. The aim of this survey was to compile a dialect atlas for the whole of northern Germany. To this end, questionnaires containing 40 sentences formulated in Standard German were sent to many localities in northern Germany. In the Hildesheim region, too, some 30 localities received this questionnaire.
