Automation of production is of decisive importance for the competitiveness of the industrial manufacture of series products. Manufacturers of such products therefore invest considerable effort in planning their production facilities. However, problems arise in describing the partial concepts developed for automation solutions and consequently also in coordinating them across technologies. To address this, a generic information model is developed that improves the availability and the coordinability of planning data. A prototypical planning tool demonstrates the usability of the information model for the planning and tendering of automation solutions.
