Declining population figures and shrinking financial resources are making cooperation an ever more promising approach, particularly for villages and municipalities in rural areas. At the same time, cooperation is increasingly being demanded as a prerequisite in national and European funding programmes or promoted through corresponding measures. Cooperation promises economic, social or cultural added value for those involved and an impetus for rural development that can only be generated jointly.

The nature of such joint, purposeful action for the benefit of the participants can, however, be highly varied: this concerns the actors, the scale, the content, the duration and the form of the collaboration. The best known are probably cooperative arrangements between villages, municipalities or regions, between local authorities and businesses, organisations or institutions, as well as joint action by citizens and administrations or by citizens with other citizens.

In this edited volume, which is essentially based on the 19th Interdisciplinary Village Symposium held from 12 to 14 May 2014 in Dipperz/Hesse, authors from various fields of activity in academia and practice report from differing perspectives on the forms, the significance and the successes of cooperation in rural areas, but also on its problems.
