The aim of the project “Potentials of electrochemical storage in electrical grids in competition with other technologies and system solutions (ESPEN)” was to develop recommendations for action regarding the deployment of electrochemical storage systems and their further development, so that they can optimally support the future energy supply system.
Within the framework of the joint project, the potentials of electrochemical storage systems were therefore examined with regard to their contribution to the economic efficiency, stability and security of the future electricity supply in Germany. Furthermore, alternative storage technologies, such as pumped hydro or compressed air storage as well as chemical storage, and system solutions, such as concepts of load management or the thermal use of electricity in switchable loads, were considered in order to identify areas of application in which electrochemical storage systems are particularly suitable. The option of grid expansion for the spatial distribution of electricity as an alternative to storage systems, which enable temporal distribution, was also examined, particularly from an economic perspective.
