A Cherokee elder tells his grandson about a battle that rages inside every person. This battle is fought by two wolves. One is a good wolf, the other an evil one. The good wolf has a great many good qualities, such as loyalty, honesty, gratitude, kindness, compassion, justice and many others. The evil wolf is evil by nature. He possesses qualities such as aggressiveness, arrogance, stinginess, greed, hatred, disloyalty, injustice and much more. After thinking for a long while, the grandson asks his grandfather: “And which wolf wins this battle?”, and the grandfather answers: “The one you feed.”

“Educating and raising are / The pillars of prosperity, mostly / Every child today knows this / Even if it is lazy and quite brazen. / Poverty is the greatest plague, / Wealth is the highest good, / Laziness needs, depending on the situation, / A thick skin and great courage. / And the spirit is driven out, / Just like that, with great cunning. / And there is no war of words, / since the stranger dominates; / Everything about him seems so genuine, / Somehow determined. / And the spirit fights doggedly / just for its survival, / Is too much at odds with itself, / cannot endure the stranger’s hold.”
