Leonhard Wolfgang Bibel (*1938) is regarded as one of the founders of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Germany and Europe. He has played a decisive part in shaping the development of this fascinating and revolutionary field both nationally and internationally. Until his retirement he taught at a number of universities in Germany and abroad, most recently as Professor of Computer Science at the Technische Universität Darmstadt. As with many scientific pioneers, his career was beset with extreme obstacles.
In this autobiography of the internationally recognised scholar, who has received numerous honours, the author describes his life, the environment in which it unfolded, and the important influences that shaped this life – and not only this one. He describes the years of National Socialism, of the Second World War and of the reconstruction after 1945, during which the family’s life took shape under sometimes extremely difficult conditions. Above all, the role of his father Hans Bibel as an educator and local politician in Nuremberg is documented.
As a continuous experience, Bibel illustrates with many examples the great value of thinking and reflection as opposed to the all too human tendency towards quick reflexes. From this he derives the maxim reflections before reflexes.
