Objective and focus:

While digitalisation is regarded as a hype topic in logistics, for many logistics service providers it is primarily characterised by uncertainty and a lack of transparency. The understanding of the term digitalisation alone is so broad that it is often unclear whether it refers to the use of digital tools in companies or to the (digital) transformation of the companies themselves. The study concentrates on the “digital benefit” of the various digitalisation tools and accordingly focuses on their application in practice.
The study thus aims to provide companies with a guide to the concrete application potentials, maturity levels and value contributions of the different digitalisation tools. The examination of the tools therefore focuses on logistics processes as well as the related services. The results of the study are intended to support companies in deciding which tool to invest in, when and why.

Digitalisation tools in logistics:

The digitalisation tools have to meet certain criteria in order to be included as a tool in the study. Subsequently, steps are formulated with which companies can identify relevant tools and derive future investment decisions. In addition to their positioning in the logistics map, digitalisation tools can be differentiated according to four process-related and three product-related application potentials. It becomes apparent that the majority of digitalisation tools have many application potentials beyond cost reduction. As a result, a paradigm shift from a cost perspective to a performance perspective becomes evident. Finally, not only the technological maturity of the tools but also their market maturity is considered. The portfolio matrix positions the investment maturity and relevance of the digitalisation tools. To round off and present the results, the tools are mapped in a hype cycle and assigned to different development phases.

Methodology:

With a view to the robustness of the results, several methods were used in the study. In addition to the analysis of numerous literature sources and the evaluation of studies already published, a total of three workshops with company representatives as well as 27 expert interviews were conducted. The findings have been incorporated into specific good practices on company solutions and into assessment profiles of 22 digitalisation tools.
