Demographic change is one of the central topics of the 21st century. Yet in earlier eras, too, scholars grappled with an increasingly ageing society in view of the steadily rising life expectancy and a decline in mortality. In the 18th century in particular, a gradual increase in life expectancy can be traced, which confronted people in the society of the time with new challenges. This work therefore explores how society dealt with the ageing individual in the 18th century, thus developing a guiding concept for demographic processes in earlier centuries.
