In the course of advancing globalisation and shortening product life cycles, small and medium-sized enterprises in particular are exposed to increased competitive pressure. This changed market and environmental situation requires adequate responses from companies, which usually also call for new strategic approaches to safeguarding their innovative capacity and competitiveness.

The integration of companies into regional networks and clusters is frequently regarded as a promising strategic response. It is assumed that cooperation within network-like structures generates synergy effects from which the actors benefit. Through participation in networks or clusters, companies are able to secure or even enhance their innovative capacity and competitiveness.

A further central focus of this work is on the topics of “learning” and “knowledge”, as these are generally regarded as essential key factors for innovation. Against this background, essential aspects and elements of “learning” and “knowledge” are also addressed in this work. Among other things, a fundamental introduction to various learning theories is provided and the role of communication in the learning process is discussed. Finally, learning processes are examined at the level of the individual, the organisation and the region.
