The main objective of this dissertation is to investigate the perceived value of second home ownership. Based on a literature review, three studies are conducted that reveal various insights into the consumption process. The first study applies the concept of self-congruity in order to test which effects self-congruity triggers in the usage phase. The second study is based on perceived value theory. By means of interviews grounded in the means-end methodology, a qualitative-exploratory approach is used to demonstrate the value contribution generated by second home ownership in terms of perceived value theory. Building on existing theoretical insights and the results of the means-end study, the third study develops a research model and hypotheses in order to test them in the pre-purchase phase. Through the introduction of the best-worst methodology in the field of perceived value theory and the latent class analysis based upon it, new survey and analysis instruments for capturing perceived consumer values are applied.

The work concludes with a chapter summarising the results of the literature analysis and the three studies and outlining implications for practice and research.
