All species require power to comprehensively inhabit a habitat and exploit its resources. Organisms that can extend beyond their native habitats, such as Homo sapiens, have demonstrated exceptional assertiveness and thereby demonstrate great power. It is this power that must be considered when discussing the political function of experts, for it is precisely this form of power that experts can generate and convey, and which is responsible for the planetary dominance of the Homo sapiens species.
The breakthrough of modern expertise was achieved only around 1800 when it displaced in Europe traditional knowledge elites from their longstanding position beside the political throne. The successful trajectory of modern expertise can be understood as a result of a cultural evolution of Homo sapiens that follows similar laws as those of the natural world.
