How did the GDR translate its conceptions of equal rights and socialist family policy into legislation? What role did ideologies and socio-political objectives play? And how did these influence gender roles, parenthood and family structures?
This dissertation examines the legal and social framework of family policy in the GDR. It analyses central pieces of legislation such as the Family Code of 1965 and reveals the role models it devised for spouses, parents and the collective. In doing so, the study shows how the GDR sought to implement its ideals of gender equality – and what tensions arose between the legal provisions and lived reality. By combining legal-historical research with social-scientific analysis, it develops a multi-layered picture of the family as the core of GDR society.
