This book examines the impact of female missionary activities on traditional
gender roles in the Bamenda Grassields of Cameroon from 1904 to
2006. It explores how Western female missionaries, through their evangelical,
educational, and healthcare initiatives, contributed to the transformation
of gender dynamics in this area. The book reveals how female missionaries
challenged traditional gender norms, promoted Western values,
and empowered local women through formal and informal education. It
highlights the complex interactions between female missionaries and local
populations, including tensions and negotiations that arose from cultural
differences. This study sheds light on the often-overlooked role of female
missionaries in shaping modern gender relations in Cameroon, making it
a valuable contribution to African history, gender studies, and colonialism.
