Marc Peter Westig was born in 1982 in Köln and received his diploma in physics from the Universität zu Köln in the year 2008. For the practical part of his diploma he moved to Jülich to work in the Institute for Nuclear Physics at the Forschungszentrum Jülich GmbH on the development of a new spectroscopy experiment of metastable hydrogen and deuterium atoms using a modified Lamb-shift polarimeter.
From 2008 to 2013, he joined the Superconducting Detectors and Devices Group at the I. Physikalisches Institut of the Universität zu Köln to work on his PhD thesis. His key research interests during this time were the physics, development, design, fabrication and characterization of novel planar-circuit balanced superconductor-insulator-superconductor (SIS) detector devices used as (coherent) heterodyne frequency mixers for terahertz signals and the fundamental aspects of superconducting condensed matter devices. In 2010, he was abroad for half a year at the Kavli Institute of Nanoscience of the Technische Universiteit Delft with a scholarship of the Bonn-Cologne Graduate School of Physics and Astronomy to work on the aspects of nonequilibrium physics in superconductors and superconducting tunnel junctions. Presently, the results of his work are considered for the next generation of terahertz heterodyne receiver instruments for astrophysical research.
Marc Peter Westig obtained his Dr. rer. nat. degree from the Universität zu Köln in the year 2013. Presently, he is preparing to move to Paris/France to work at the Service de Physique de l’Etat Condense of the Commissariat à l’énergie atomique in Saclay as a Postdoctoral Research Associate.
