With ever more models, automobile manufacturers aim to occupy the last remaining niches in partly saturated sales markets. As a consequence, vehicle testing must represent a multitude of environmental influences across an increasing number of variants. Against this background, a planning method for managing variant complexity is developed which ensures that a testing demand determined on the basis of development complexities and product maturity levels is covered. Reliability theory as well as design of experiments are incorporated into the development of a testing plan optimized with regard to resource and reliability aspects.
