The new Pentecostal-charismatic churches and movements are regarded as the fastest growing and most dynamic socio-religious movements worldwide – as is also the case in Tanzania since the 1980s. The young, dynamic churches challenge the piety and theology of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania (ELCT). In recent years many members have left the Lutheran Church in Tanzania and joined a Pentecostal-charismatic congregation. These conversions have led to tensions between the two Christian churches. In his study, Brighton Katabaro examines the social, economic, doctrinal and ecclesiological reasons for changing church affiliation. He presents the doctrine and practices of the Pentecostal-charismatic churches and at the same time analyses the controversy with the Lutheran Church in Tanzania. In particular, the relationship between the Lutheran Church and the Pentecostal-charismatic churches with regard to their doctrines and practices concerning the central theological themes of “justification and sanctification” had not previously been investigated in a theological-scholarly manner. Thus the Pentecostal-charismatic teachings on the prosperity gospel, on being saved, on healing, sin and the treatment of sinners as well as excommunication are comprehensively examined in this study using the example of one Pentecostal-charismatic church. However, the present study sets out not only the differences but also the commonalities between the Lutheran Church and the Pentecostal-charismatic churches in Tanzania. In this way the study serves as preliminary work for the inter-confessional and ecumenical dialogue between the two churches in Tanzania.

Brighton Mufuruki Katabaro, born in 1969 in Katembe, Karagwe in north-western Tanzania, is a pastor of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania, Karagwe Diocese (KAD). From 1992 to 1997 he completed his Bachelor of Divinity studies at Makumira University College before being ordained as a pastor on 14 December 1997. He then worked from 1997 to 2001 as a parish pastor in Kayanga, Karagwe. From 2001 to 2003 he completed his Master of Theology, likewise at Makumira University College, Tanzania, and subsequently worked for a short time as a hospital chaplain in Nyakahanga, Karagwe. From 2003 to 2004 he attended a German language course in Bochum, Germany. In October 2004 he began his doctoral studies in theology at the University of Hamburg under Professor Dr Johann Anselm Steiger and received his doctorate in theology in July 2009. He is widowed and has two girls, Aganyila and Amanya (7 and 3½ years old).
