Group housing of lactating sows with their piglets is an economically interesting alternative to the individual housing otherwise customary during this phase. The performance and the cost-reduction potential of this housing system are investigated. The results show that the housing system is suitable for practical use and efficient. Furthermore, building costs can be considerably reduced with the aid of group housing, and savings in working time are possible despite the additional tasks involved, even though cleaning and disinfection are more labour-intensive.
Animal health management as an optimisation factor is examined in more detail, using the example of the all-in/all-out procedure with cleaning, disinfection and sow washing. A cost accounting model is developed that facilitates the business-management assessment of these measures. Depending on the specific conditions, the costs of the all-in/all-out procedure vary widely. Since the measured labour requirement – at 1 to 4 working hours per litter – varies considerably between farms, this factor, together with the imputed wage rate, has a decisive influence on costs.
To date, no decision-support tool for the profitability of organic sow husbandry has been published. A user-friendly planning model with 9 variable framework factors is developed which can be used for individual planning, but which also provides general information by means of scenario technique. This makes economically better-founded decisions possible. Under current conditions, good management is required in order to organise organic sow husbandry profitably.
The application files (cost accounting model for the all-in/all-out procedure and planning model for the profitability of organic sow husbandry) are supplied on CD-ROM.
