This work addresses the optimization of high-power distributed feedback diode lasers for wavelengths in the range of 1 µm. A Bragg grating is integrated into the lasers, the grating grooves of which are tilted by a small angle with respect to the facet normal (a-DFB lasers) and which acts as both a lateral and a longitudinal mode filter.
In addition to two newly developed modelling methods for a-DFB lasers, the adapted fabrication technology, including the necessary packaging technology, is explained. The modelling-supported systematic experimental investigations of the influence of the design parameters — such as resonator length, contact stripe width, reflection coefficients, grating period and groove depth of the integrated Bragg grating — on the laser properties lead to optimal laser configurations.
