The extraction of multiphase mixtures of oil, gas and aqueous salt solutions is becoming increasingly important, particularly in subsea applications. For this purpose, twin-screw pumps are installed in the immediate vicinity of the production wells in order to transport the mixtures through a single pipeline over long distances. Separation plants are therefore not required close to the source. The development and design of these pumps leads to very large units, by means of which mixtures with very high gas volume fractions are pumped.
In order to ensure trouble-free operation of the pumps, a calculation method based on mass and energy balances is developed in the present research work in order to predict the pressure and temperature changes in the mixture as well as the resulting flow rate and the required drive power. The various flow patterns within the pump are visualised and taken into account in the calculation model. In addition, the flow patterns within the pump are predicted numerically. An evaluation of the calculated results is made possible by measuring the pressure profile, the flow rate and the shaft power. On the basis of the calculated and experimental results, the influence of the gas volume fraction in the mixture, the screw rotational speed, the differential pressure and the screw design on the pumping behaviour is predicted.
