Although customer-oriented companies increasingly recognise the prompt quotation and reliable adherence to delivery dates as an important competitive factor, an efficient and transparent allocation of the shortages arising in the acceptance and processing of customer orders is often neglected. Within the modular Advanced Planning & Scheduling systems, the demand fulfillment modules are promoted by the vendors as the answer to the challenges of due date setting and monitoring of customer orders, and thus also of shortage allocation.

Against this background, the aim of the present work was to analyse the shortage allocation methods employed within demand fulfillment and to develop own approaches to compensate for the deficits identified. These own approaches focused on shortage allocation in order monitoring and shortage allocation in order acceptance with anticipation. In this context, it was examined to what extent the revenue management methods used in the airline industry and the service sector are suitable for supporting order acceptance decisions in production environments. In order to quantify the advantageousness of the developed methods, they were applied to a case study from the telecommunications industry.
