In this dissertation, carbohydrate arrays were prepared and used to investigate carbohydrate–protein interactions. To this end, suitably functionalised carbohydrates were synthesised, characterised and covalently immobilised on complementarily derivatised glass slides by means of reductive amination or amide bond formation. The immobilisation reaction could be monitored using fluorescently labelled carbohydrates. With the aid of fluorescently labelled lectins, carbohydrate–protein interactions were detected and characterised in more detail with respect to their selectivity, reversibility and polyvalency.
