Calls for effective procedures for the (self-)selection and recruitment of suitable candidates for teacher education are currently growing louder. Findings from studies have long shown that it is not always possible to attract resilient, relationship-capable and motivated individuals to the teaching profession, which is of such great importance to society.
The book asks which factors influence the decision to pursue a career in teaching. An empirically tested model provides answers to this question.
At the heart of the study lies the tension between objectively measured and subjectively articulated fit:
• Is it possible to identify risk groups at an early stage, i.e. individuals who express the wish to become teachers but display personal characteristics and interests unfavourable to the profession?
• Who is not interested in the teaching profession but would nevertheless be well suited to it? Why do these individuals have no interest in becoming teachers?
The results yield new insights into how the aspiration to become a teacher develops. On this basis, the author draws practical conclusions for recruitment, career counselling, career management and the design of teacher education.
