The Vehicle in the Loop test setup was developed for the safe, reproducible and resource-efficient testing of driver assistance functions intended to provide support in critical traffic situations. It combines the advantages of driving simulators and a real test vehicle by integrating the latter into a traffic simulation. The virtual surrounding traffic is displayed to the driver in a realistic manner during the drive by means of an optical see-through head mounted display. The Vehicle in the Loop test setup avoids simulator sickness, also known as motion sickness.
With the aid of sensor models, it is possible for driver assistance functions to react to the virtual surrounding traffic at an early stage of development, so that the function can be tested realistically and without danger to humans or machines.
