The book provides an extensive insight into orthopaedic diseases of the early 20th century in Germany, specifically in the greater Hanover area. A comprehensive collection of X-ray and patient images from the Annastift Hannover (formerly “Krüppelheim”) dating from October 1908 to September 1942 was analysed from human-biological, historical and sociocultural perspectives. Some of the most frequent conditions in this collection (hip dislocation, infectious diseases (such as tuberculosis and osteomyelitis), rickets and scoliosis) are described, evaluated and discussed in the context of the period. The effects of the ideology of the Third Reich on clinical work were also examined. A further aspect of this work deals with Harris lines (growth arrest lines), which are commonly regarded as an indicator of deficiency states. The early 20th century is considered a decisive phase of transition from high to low mortality. This study aims to show whether evidence for this statement can be found.
