This study is the first to address the development of a genuinely school-based concept of health promotion on the basis of neuroscientific research findings. The guiding focus is directed at so-called promotory factors such as nutrition, physical activity, sleep, etc., and at inhibitory aspects such as environmental pollutants, nicotine and alcohol consumption, stress, etc. What all these factors have in common is that they have either a promoting or an inhibiting effect on neuro-psycho-physical individuality and thus on the teaching, learning and educational process. Promoting neurobiological health in the school context creates a biological basis for an optimised development of mental, cognitive and physical performance; it lays the foundation for a “healthy school” and hence for a healthier society. The approach presented moreover implies applicability in competitive and recreational sport as well as in health and rehabilitation sport and in school and senior sport.
The use of the Greek term gymnásion in the title of the book is a play on words: the original gymnásion denoted a place for the physical and intellectual training of male youth in ancient Greece, while the present-day term Gymnasium derives from the German humanists’ use of the word for the meeting place of philosophers and sophists.
