This conference volume is based on the conference “Film und Internet – Über die Nutzung von Film- und Videocontent im Web 2.0” (“Film and the Internet: On the Use of Film and Video Content in Web 2.0”), held in November 2007 at the Universität Karlsruhe (TH). The conference was organised by Filmboard Karlsruhe e.V. in cooperation with the Medienzentrum at the Universität Karlsruhe (TH).

The contributions to this volume address the topic from a wide range of perspectives. They show how internet users network with one another in order to exchange film and video content and the accompanying meta-communications via corresponding web platforms, and to produce such content themselves. Both the user behaviour of professional filmmakers and the potential for private producers of film and video content are examined. In addition, the volume analyses the significance of the digitalisation of the film and video market for the film and media industries. Various user types are also presented and classified, e.g. the film producers themselves, consumers, recipients and film pirates. From a generational perspective, young people and “silver surfers” are furthermore examined more closely with regard to their film and internet usage behaviour. The volume contains contributions by Karsten Weber, Oliver Langewitz, Thomas Döbler, Oliver Klosa, Horst Niesyto and Christoph Eisemann, Steffen Hartmann, Andre Stuber and Bianca Lehmann.
