This work presents approaches and results according to which the development of a lateral guidance assistant can be carried out within a problem-oriented development path borrowed from systems engineering, with the aim of cooperative driver assistance. The lateral guidance assistant supports the driver in the tasks of lane changing and lane keeping in order to significantly reduce the risk of accidents when performing these two lateral driving manoeuvres. Particular attention is paid to the driver-appropriate design of the system’s interface to the user (human-machine interface), since from the customer’s point of view this represents the respective system.
