Individualization of goods and services refers to the definition and design of product characteristics so that they correspond as precisely as possible to the individual preferences of the customer. As a competitive strategy, it opens up opportunities for differentiation and for exploiting willingness to pay. To date, however, Information Systems research has devoted only limited attention to the challenges this poses for enterprise information systems – even though the digitization and virtualization of goods and services, of processes and value creation systems should provide excellent conditions for this. Under the heading of Individualization Engineering, this book describes a novel, methodical approach to solving the individualization problem. In doing so, the value creation system in its entirety – from upstream suppliers to the end customer – is always regarded as the solution space. The book is divided into four sections: individualization framework; models and methods; technologies; case studies. It thus offers a comprehensive and at the same time detailed insight into the central questions, solution approaches and methods. Individualization Engineering is also the research topic of the Chair of Information Systems 2 at the University of Hohenheim, on the occasion of whose fifth anniversary the present volume is published.
