Andreas, a German,
Tien, a Vietnamese woman,
both divorced, Tien with a child.
Their mutual love and their intention to marry meet with serious reservations on Tien’s part, as she initially perceives the barriers between the two cultures and their different religious affiliations as difficult to overcome. Tien agreed to Andreas’s marriage proposal only after a long period of reflection and exchange of views, and after unmistakably ascertaining his love and his open-mindedness. The sensitivity, self-respect and intelligence of the Vietnamese woman on the one hand — which even wins over Andreas’s initially sceptical parents — and on the other hand the patience and understanding attitude of the German man and his respect for, indeed his enthusiasm for, Vietnamese culture ultimately overcome all reservations, and Tien and Andreas crown their love with a happy marriage.
