Amines constitute an important class of compounds, used in industry, for example, as fine chemicals, pharmaceutical active ingredients or chiral intermediates, as well as in the laboratory. In recent years, their preparation by metal-catalysed hydroamination of olefins and alkynes has gained considerable importance. This method offers an economic advantage over conventional multi-step syntheses, in which a number of by-products and waste products are generated.
The groups of Roesky and Blechert synthesised the new zinc complex [{N-isopropyl-2-(isopropylamino)troponiminato}methylzinc] [{ATI(iPr)2}ZnMe], which catalyses the hydroamination of non-activated double and triple bonds and is at the same time compatible with polar groups such as ether, amide and hydroxylamine functionalities. This complex is comparatively air-stable and exhibits high activity in intramolecular hydroaminations. The {ATI}Zn system can be modified at three different positions of the catalyst framework to enhance activity:
—> at the nitrogen atoms, through differing steric and electronic demand
—> through donors and acceptors on the ring system
—> at the zinc atom, through various leaving groups.
