Subject of the study.
This study developed the foundations for assessing the immune status of mussels as indicator organisms in aquatic ecosystems and for developing an immunotoxicity test procedure for freshwater environments.

Methodology: the primary immunotoxicological endpoints investigated were modulations of phagocytic activity and of the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in vitro and in vivo using mussels of the species Anodonta anatina (duck mussel). Secondary endpoints were haemocyte viability and changes in viable haemocyte density. Flow cytometric, photometric and fluorimetric methods were established and validated for recording the measurement parameters.
